Total WellnessWellnessTotal wellness is about balance. It requires a balance of physical good health, mental well-being and spiritual wellness. Reaching total wellness means being as strong and healthy in mind and body as we possibly can. The degree of achievable strength will vary from person to person: we were not all designed to be great athletes any more than we were all given the brain-power to become great scientists. Total wellness is not about competing with other people, it is all about each individual realising his or her own personal potential to the fullest extent - at any age. Nobody on this earth is perfect, you will achieve balance by accepting your flaws and making yourself the best you can be as a member of the human race.To achieve our own total wellness level, we need to learn how to maintain a healthy lifestyle. This includes taking care of our physical wellness, working on our mental wellness and cultivating our spiritual wellness. Our strategy needs to include the right sort of exercise and good nutrition. It is as important to feed and exercise the mind and spirit as it is to feed and exercise the body. Reaching the ideal level of wellness will be different for everyone. For some people attaining total wellness will involve a lifestyle change such as a change of employment, for others the challenge will be to start an exercise regime to improve their physical fitness, others might find their biggest challenge in kicking a harmful habit, other people will find their big challenge in building up self esteem. Over fiftyWhat does over fifty mean? To many people being aged over fifty means pert has become just a memory and saggy is lurking in the mirror or waiting to pounce. Muscle tissue diminishes, bone density deteriorates, wrinkles replace character lines and depression is hovering ready to settle. These things don't actually occur during the night before your fiftieth birthday, it just seems that way. In reality all the unwanted aspects of an over fifty physique creep up gradually and their appearance can be postponed dramatically. By taking evasive action, the encounter with saggy can be postponed for many years. The very process of becoming physically stronger encourages positive thoughts and assists the cultivation of a strong self-image. Depression can be banished and replaced by an optimistic, positive outlook.If you have always kept to a good diet, taken a sensible amount of exercise, and never used tobacco or other harmful substances, you will undoubtedly wake up on your fiftieth birthday without showing any ill effects due to the date. You can carry on as if nothing momentous (ie turning fifty) had just happened and can congratulate yourself on the foundation you have laid by following a healthy lifestyle. Unfortunately, some of us have been less than sensible about diet and exercise. Waking up aged fifty and recognising that, even if you aren't an out and out couch potato, you are showing definite slothful tendencies, is a good start, next comes action. By the age of fifty, you don't have the luxury of spending years in denial and procrastination. You don't need to just stop the clock, you need to turn it back and that will take serious commitment starting today. Don't think of it as sacrificing things you enjoy or tackling a hard task, think of it as giving yourself the enormous benefits of an improved lifestyle. No matter what your present age, today is the best day to start turning yourself into a healthier, happier person than you have ever been. Don't listen to anyone who tells you it is too late just because you are over fifty or that it doesn't matter at your time of life. Just tell those people you are in your prime, ignore their negative influence and work on looking and feeling as good as you possibly can. We all deserve to look and feel as good as we can because each and every one of us is worth it. Maybe you will never achieve the perfect balance but every step closer to it, brings you its own rewards. Achieving total wellness is a journey, not a race and it is a journey to be enjoyed. |
