Writing has never been more important than it is today. That might seem like a
strange statement considering that everyone from pre-schoolers to great
grandparents carries a cell phone and the most popular
method of communication, text messaging, has its own strangely

The custom of social letter-writing is, sadly, long dead. Business correspondence
still thrives, but even that is often reduced to cryptic email exchanges.
Why is writing so important right now? One reason is because of the
Internet. A picture might
be worth a thousand words but not to the search engines: if your website
does not offer the search engines their staple diet of text, they will soon
leave to graze elsewhere. Although graphics are useful for attracting the
attention of human website visitors, it is the text that will make them
prolong their visit. Eye candy is fine for cheering up a website but
the effect will be wasted if it is accompanied by poor spelling and sloppy grammar.
There is a saying "content is king". That little saying is true but
I would qualify it to say good content is king. Substandard content will reduce
a website to the level of the poorest peasant in the kingdom.
